Forums 101

Greetings! This is a re-construction of the guide I created a year ago. It's intended to help users understand the basic principals of how to use the forum posting system, and how to properly format your posts. By the time you're done reading this, you'll be able to create great looking posts with minimal effort, as well as being able to brag to your friends about your 'l33t f0rum skillz'.

Table of Contents:
1. Base Details
2. Basic Formatting
3. Text Formatting
4. Spoilers
5. Adding Images
6. Adding Movies
7. Adding links
8. Working with lists
9. Working with Polls
10. Code Blocks
11. Giving Reputation
12. Anchors and Jumps

1. Base Details
Spoiler:
Our forum runs on what's called forum software, this is the framework of the forum that handles all the grunt work. Our current forum software's called MyBB (http://www.mybb.com).

Posts are formatted using something called BBCode tags. These transform bland text into professional-looking, appealing messages. The fundamental principal behind tags is that you enclose what you want to format in a pair of tags, which contains an opening tag and a closing tag. Sounds confusing, doesn't it? Let me show you what I'm talking about: Let's say I want to create bold text. I would type this as follows:
Code:
[b]This text would be bold![/b]
Still confused? Don't be! The [ b] is the opening tag, while the [ /b] is the closing tag. All closing tags are a mirror of the opening tag with a '/' in front.

1. Basic formatting
Spoiler:
So, now you know about tags, but what can you actually do with them? As it turns out, quite a few things. This section will only cover the basic use of tags to emphasize points and neaten up posts.

Bold, Italics, Underlined and Strikethrough are all built on almost identical concepts. Have a look at the examples below:
Code:
[b]This text would be bold![/b]
[i]This text would be in Italics![/i]
[u]This text would be underlined![/u]
[s]This text would be striked out![/s]

These are all core functions and are used in a wide variety of ways to emphasize points and prioritize information.

Tip! Why not create a test-thread? You can do so by clicking "post new thread" in any forum, then clicking "save as draft" from the editor. You can then edit this draft at any time from your User CP. That way you can play around to your heart's content and nobody will see any mistakes!

3. Text Formatting
Spoiler:
In the last section, I showed you how to make your text prettier with with bold, italics, etc. Building on that, this section will show you how to color your text, as well as how to change the font and size.

1. Colors Coloring text is extremely simple, most people use the Post Editor to color their posts. To do this, simply click the 'A' symbol at the top of the post editor, a color box should drop down. Choose your desired color, type your text and hit "close tags". Done!
If you need a little more versatility, you can always choose a color from http://www.html-color-codes.info and place it inside your opening color tag.

2. Changing the font Currently, we support the following fonts:

Arial (Default)
Courier
Impact
Tahoma
Times New Roman
Trebuchet MS
Verdana

To change the font of text, head to the top of your post editor, and click the "Font" dropdown list. Choose your desired font, type your text and hit "Close Tags". Done!

3. Changing the text size

Almost identical to the last procedure, simply click "Text Size" from the top of your post editor, type your text and hit "close tags"

4. Spoilers
Spoiler:
People often overestimate the difficulty involved in creating spoilers. Not only are they incredibly easy to create, they're also incredibly useful for hiding large pieces of text, or for breaking up text. (This guide makes extensive use of that feature :3). To create one, simply follow the example below:
Code:
[spoiler]This text will be hidden in a spoiler![/spoiler]
Fun fact: Hardly anyone actually uses spoilers to keep from spoiling anything.

5. Adding Images
Spoiler:
Images are hugely important to posts, they're used in everything from wise-cracking memes to screenshots of an offender, so it's important you learn how to use them.

To post an image you should:
1. Find an image you like, if it's from an online source, skip to step 4.
2. If your image is stored locally, upload it to an image sharing website, such as http://www.imgur.com.
3. Once you've uploaded the image, the website should provide you with something called BBCode. Copy this, and paste it into your post.
4. If your image is from an online source, simply right click the image, hit "copy image URL".
5. Once you've got your image URL, click the painting-thing icon on your post editor, and paste in the URL.

If all goes well, your code should look something like this:
Code:
[img]http://www.image-sharing-site.com/derpaherp[/img]

6. Adding Movies
Spoiler:
Pasting /watch? links just isn't cool anymore. What is cool is being able to embed playable videos into your posts, here's how to do so:

1. Right click a playing video from any of the following sites:
YouTube, Vimeo, Metacafe, DailyMotion, MySpace TV or Yahoo Video. For this example, I'll be using YouTube.

2. Once you've right clicked it, select "copy video URL".

3. Hit the TV icon in your post editor, select your site and paste in the Video URL. Done!

If all goes well, here's what your code should look like:
Code:
[video=youtube]http://youtube.com/some_URL[/video]

7. Adding Links
Spoiler:
Hyperlinking is another one of those features that people overestimate the difficulty of. For starters, if you're lazy, you can just post the Copy/Paste the link into your post. However, sometimes you might want to get a little fancier, say, adding a title to your URL. To do so, simply click the World/Chain icon at the top of your post editor, and paste in your link. You will then be prompted for a title.

8. Working with lists
Spoiler:
Sometimes you may want to neatly order some information. Lists are a great way of doing this. They come in two forms, ordered and unordered. Ordered lists are number each list item, while unordered lists simply place a bullet point before each item.

To create a list, simply select the type of list you'd like from the toolbar at the top of your post editor, and enter each list item you want. When you're done, leave the next list item prompt blank and hit "Ok".

9. Working with Polls
Spoiler:
Polls are a great way of easily judging the public's opinion on a subject. to create one, first create a thread. While in the post editor, check the "I want to post a poll" box, and specify how many options there will be. When you click "post thread", you'll be taken to the Poll Configuration page, which will allow you to specify the question, what the options are, if the poll is multiple choice, and so on. Note that you can have a maximum of 10 options in one poll.

10. Code Blocks
Spoiler:
Sometimes, you might want to show someone what the BBCode tags are for a certain function, but not have that function activate. Sounds a little confusing I know. Let's say you wanted to show someone how the Bold Tag works, if you were to try to show the tags in ordinary text, they'd disappear. Why? Because MyBB tries to turn them into bold text of course :p. So, this is where the [ code] tag comes in handy. Anything written inside of a pair of code tags will never be turned into formatted text. So, we could do something like this:
Code:
[b][i][s][u]You can tag me all you want, I ain't gonna change![/u][/s][/i][/b]

11. Giving Reputation
Spoiler:
Do you wonder what those little Green and Red numbers are next to the word "Reputation:" are? Well here is what you need to know.

These little numbers are called Reputation points (commonly abbreviated as Rep). Reputation points are given to a person on the forum by other forum members. You can't give them to yourself, but you can earn them. Reputation are earned a variety of ways. For posting something Helpful, Humorous, Positive etc. Sometimes you'll even get Rep for just posting things in a well written format or for being kind to others. For these kind of posts you'll get +1 Rep occasionally.

However their is such a thing as bad Rep. If you break rules, cause trouble, are rude to others, or never give valuable/constructive input on a topic you can get -1 Rep occasionally.

You can even give/receive Neutral Rep. Which will neither adds or subtracts from your current Rep. These are normally to leave a little comment to the person but not changing their Rep amount.

There are 2 ways to give Reputation points. The first is by clicking on the "Rep" button that is found on a member's post. When you do a little window will appear that lets you chose what kind of Rep to give and leave a message. The second way is by going to a users profile and clicking the "Rate" button next to their current Rep points. If you want to view your Rep points to see you gave them to you or what comments were left, you can click on the Rep points on one of your post or check from you profile page.

Note: Never give Rep points (good or bad) for things that happen in the game, or somewhere other than the PigCraft QC forums. The Reputation points are strictly for what happens here in our forum community. Don't get into Rep Wars with others either, or you could get in trouble.

12. Anchors and Jumps
Spoiler:
Ever wanted to bring users quickly to a section of your post (like the table of contents in this guide)? Well then, Anchor/Jumps are for you! These work by first setting an anchor with the [ anchor=anchor-name-here] tag. Type whatever text will be the anchor, and close the anchor tag. So, a sample anchor would look as follows:
Code:
[anchor=TestAnchor]I'm a test anchor![/anchor]

So, now that you've got your anchor in place, it's time to make the jump. The Jump is the link to the anchor, clicking on it will scroll the user's browser to the top of the anchor text. To create a jump, you do so like this:
Code:
[jump=Name-Of-Your-Anchor]This will take me to an anchor![/jump]

If all goes well, you should end up with something like this:
Code:
[anchor=some_anchor] This is an Anchor yo![/anchor]
[jump=some_anchor] This will take me to the anchor some_anchor![/jump]

Well, that concludes my guide! I hope I've been able to teach you a few tricks, and that you'll be able to format your posts "liek a bawws" now.

Got any feedback, comments or suggestions? I'd love to hear them! Post below if you feel I've left out anything or something could be improved.

Thanks for reading~

Images in the shoutbox are in theory the same thing, the BBCode parses just fine. However, Happy or another administrator may have denied the required permissions from the ACP.

Don't worry about posting btw. It's only closed because the forums auto-closes it after a few weeks of inactivity. It's re-open now, feedback is welcome, as always, from everyone.

Great guide btw. Maybe I'm just an idiot but I never seem to get quotes to work. Whenever I click on the quote button, nothing happens.
Starting from now, I will give back any NEGATIVE rep given to me.

Click on the greed plus that says "quote this post" and then reply to that person's post.

I use a different theme. The options are: Quote, +Multiquote. Both don't work with what you said.
